SUSTAINABILITY
An important goal when designing this project was to create a healthcare building that met Zero Energy Building standards. The center must produce enough renewable energy to meet its own annual energy consumption requirements, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, operating costs, and energy usage substantially. According to the New Buildings Institute (NBI), PCHC is the first verified Zero Energy outpatient clinic in North America.
Key Net-Zero features
“Zero Energy is an aspect of the project I mention every chance I can, and I think it will shine a very positive light on PCHC and the Pueblo community. I’m very proud that we are delivering this project and achieving such impactful, beneficial goals as a result.”
-Donald Moore, CEO, Pueblo Community Health Center
- Extensive Natural Light: Triple-glazed fiberglass windows, sun shades, and LED lighting system
- Biophilic Design incorporates natural elements that promote well-being, sustainability, and stress reduction, creating a harmonious coexistence between construction and nature.
- Three-Story Atrium: Providing natural ventilation and energy efficiency.
- Solar Panel System: 280 kW PV array of Solar panels on the roof and in the parking lot over a carport contribute to reducing carbon emissions, help reduce operating costs, and build resistance against power outages.
- Geothermal Heating/Cooling System: Four miles of piping and ground-source heat pumps provide heating and cooling for the building.
Community impact
Historically, Pueblo has relied primarily on the Steel industry and others like it to maintain its economy and create local job opportunities. However, this industry sometimes contributes to toxic pollutants in nearby neighborhoods. These pollutants, such as lead and mercury, can create problems in human health and the ecosystem.
PCHC’s achievement inspires innovations in sustainability that are possible in Pueblo’s community. The local Urban Renewal Authority, inspired by PCHC, has designated an urban renewal district surrounding the health center. The district includes a community center, city park, middle school, library, church, and several more properties in an underserved community. Taking on the challenge of Net-zero energy, Bryan Construction sets a goal for other local General Contractors to strive for. The building serves as a reminder about how one environmentally conscious choice can positively influence a community, creating better opportunities for a more sustainable future.
